Students will gain skills in relaxation, concentration, and communication through breath and movement. Students learn to create a reality in the given circumstances of a play by exploring the rules of the “world” when playing a character. Students are given a framework to incorporate their body in storytelling through Viewpoints exercises. Students will level up to the next tier by confidently performing/recording a classical monologue with demonstrated understanding of the given circumstances, geography of thought, and viewpoints.

This tier builds on the skills learned in Tier I by adding vocal technique and textual analysis to the actors repertoire. Students learn about how to safely and skillfully engage the voice in their performance, through study of the vocal instrument’s anatomy and phonetic transcription of text. Students learn to analyze theatrical works, do dramaturgical research, and create an active performance out of what they find. Students will approach scenes and monologues of classical and contemporary works, be assigned to read plays of great importance, and learn about theatre history and storytelling across different cultures. Students will level up to Tier III after demonstrating ability and understanding in each of these areas, culminating in two prepared contemporary monologues.

For students who have leveled through Tier II and who are considering pursuing a theatre degree or are looking to begin their acting career*. Students will learn to prepare and maintain a selection of monologues for their “back pocket”, successfully prepare for an audition as well as learn about the business of acting. Everything from audition etiquette, necessary materials, building a resume, websites, self-tapes and more will be covered. Students will build on the skills they’ve acquired through coaching and through discussion about their goals as an artist.
